KFC/MVM Mechanicals Properties of Materials

Lecturers: Libor Kvítek, Lubomír Lapčík
Lecture: 2 hours/week + seminar 1 hour/week
Credits: 2
Winter semester
Form of course completion: course credit, exam

It deals with fundamental rheology and the fundamental description of viscous behaviour of liquid phase and elastic or viscous-elastic behaviour of solid phase. Apart from theoretical knowledge from these disciplines involving the behaviour of real systems, the course deals with experimental methods for the study of mechanical properties and practical methods of testing the materials in terms of their use in industry.

  • Key terms in rheology as a science about mechanical properties of materials. Stress-strain relation in real substances.
  • Basic types of rheological behaviour of materials and their rheological models.
  • Hydrodynamics of real liquid. Laminar and turbulent flow. Viscosity.
  • Viscosity measurement of liquids and its impact in practical applications.
  • Stress-strain relation in solid substances. Hook's law. Modulus of elasticity.
  • Deformation mechanisms. Elastic and plastic behaviour of solid materials.
  • Basic linear and non-linear elasticity of solid-substances.
  • Plastic deformation of solid substances. Superplasticity. Materials with elastic memory.
  • Flow mechanisms of solid substances. Cross slip and elongation of solids.
  • Defects of Crystal lattice  and their impact on mechanical properties and strength of crystals.
  • Mechanisms of destruction solid substance. Fundamental principles of fracture mechanics.
  • Experimental methods  testing the strength and hardness of solid substances. Fatigue testing.
