Lecturer: Georgios Komis
Seminar: 2 hours/week
Credits: 3
Summer semester
Form of course completion: colloquium
The first part of the series of seminars will focus on working with literature and literature sources. Basic concepts. Electronic information resources and their types (bibliographic, full-text and hybrid, multidisciplinary and specialized, freely available and paid). Selected multidisciplinary, specialized and citation databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Biological Abstracts, Current Contens, JCR). Full text databases (Science Direct, SpringerLink). Basic rules for the practical use of literature sources in the preparation of scientific publications.
The second part of a series of seminars will be devoted to the basic principles of work and searching for information in NCBI sequence databases (nucleotide BLAST, protein BLAST), their interpretation and practical use in biotechnological research. Comparison of the sequences of nucleic acids and proteins, search of genes, identification of protein domains.
Form of seminars – after the initial theoretical lectures, students will solve the specified problem tasks.
