KBC/MBIOG Molecular Biology
Lecturer: Ivo Frébort
Lecture: 3 hours/week + seminar 1 hour/week
Credits: 3
Winter semester
Form of course completion: exam
The subject gives advanced and complex view of molecular processes in cells. Lecturing is based on the international textbook Molecular Biology of the Cell supplemented with newest findings in the field. The lectures are accompanied with instructive animations and videos of cellular and molecular events and seminar discussion. The course includes ten topics dedicated to the principles and molecular basics of important cellular processes, final two topics cover the techniques of molecular biology that made possible to reach the current level of knowledge. Selected topics will be given in English; the students may use the help of a lecturer of English language at the seminar.
Lecture topics:
- Cells and genomes
- DNA and chromosomes
- DNA replication, repair and recombination
- Transcription and translation
- Regulation of gene expression
- Cellular organization, cytoskeleton
- Movement of organelles, protein sorting
- Membrane transport
- Signaling
- Cell cycle
- Techniques of molecular biology I, manipulation of DNA, RNA and proteins
- Techniques of molecular biology II, visualization of cells and cellular structures
