P1417 Chemistry – Organic chemistry

Field of study guarantor: Prof. RNDr. Jan Hlaváč, Ph.D.

Guarantor of study: Department of Organic Chemistry

Field of study:

The Department of Organic Chemistry offers the PhD study of organic chemistry focused especially on the synthesis of organic compounds, determination of their structure and the study of the structure/biological activity relationship. It also involves the recognition of the mechanism of chemical processes, the preparation of new organic molecules with desired properties usable for various practical applications in pharmacy, biochemistry, biology, polymer chemistry and the chemistry of new materials.

The well-equipped laboratories for organic synthesis are at student´s disposal for their experimental work. The Department is also equipped by modern analytical (HPLC, UPLC-MS, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, spectrofluorometer, IR spectrometer) and (semi)preparative instrumentation (HPLC, flash chromatograph).

The Department of Organic Chemistry has developed the international collaboration with various institutions and universities, which enables Ph.D. students to gain professional and language experiences. The Department cooperates with a number of national as well as foreign research institutions such as Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry AS CR (Czech Republic), the University of Notre Dame (USA), the University of Tromso (Norway) and the University of Southern Denmark (Denmark).

The dissertation is led by experienced tutor who is an expert in the field of research. The results of PhD student research are presented at both national as well as international organic chemistry conferences. Students contribute to reputable international scientific journals as well. PhD students are significantly involved in grant projects as well.

Olomouc is the ancient town and its history dates back to the 10th century AD when it became an important trade crossing-point. It has the second most significant collection of historical monuments in the country after Prague. The second oldest university in the Czech lands was founded in Olomouc in the year 1573. Today, the city has a population of over 100,000 inhabitants. It is the fifth largest city in the Czech Republic and the seat of the Olomouc Region. At present, the city is experiencing major development in the areas of culture, accommodation, food, dining and tourism.

Entrance exams requirements:

Applicants for the Ph.D. study of organic chemistry must be MSc graduates, with chemical orientation, of a university or institute. The formal requirements and documents necessary for application are listed in Academic norm PřF UP.

It is desired that applicants have a good theoretical knowledge and practical experience in all basic chemical fields (general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and biochemistry). In addition, applicants are expected to have a good knowledge of math, physics, problems of general protection and industrial chemistry. They must be familiar with analytical methods of structure analyses.

Requirements are checked during the entrance interview. Foreign applicants must prove that their graduate materials are equal to those obtained at a Czech university, that they are able to communicate in the English or Czech language and that they have been awarded an adequate fellowship or have other financial support.
